LEARNING & SERVING

Every other year, we plan a Service & Learning trip.

After the Covid-19 pandemic, we were excited to meet as a group and plan to travel again.  In August, 2022 we travelled to Leamington, Ontario for a week supporting community organizations and enjoying the scenic beauty in Point Pelee National Park.  We worked alongside other volunteers at the Gleaners where we prepared food for dehydration.  The dehydrated vegetable mix and fruit snacks are distributed to community partners and reputable relief agencies around the world.  We also sorted food at the Food Hub as way to provide locally grown produce to food banks.  We enjoyed helping out at the Thrift on Mill, a local Mennonite Central Committee thrift shop.  It was a wonderful trip providing us with opportunities to make new friends and enjoy the diverse selection of cuisine at restaurants.

In 2017, eleven people from Zion went to Ottawa.  Goals of the trip were met:  relationship building within group; doing service; learning; and having fun. Service projects included painting Sunday School classrooms and working on flowerbeds at Ottawa Mennonite Church (OMC); building a shed and doing yard work at OMC’s young adult house; working at Ottawa Food Bank’s garden, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables and cleaning them in preparation for distribution. Spending time with staff at Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ottawa office and having a tour of the parliament buildings were the “learning” component. The Ottawa Office is MCC’s voice to the Canadian government, advocating for policies that support the work of relief, development and peacebuilding. Time was also spent praying on Parliament Hill for the leaders and our country. AND we had a lot of fun….all living together in a nice, spacious house; sharing meals and chores; lots of chatting; some game playing; exploring the city on bikes or walking; checking out Byward Market and eating downtown. It was a great experience hanging out together and giving a hand with needed work at the same time.
