LEARNING & SERVING
Every other year, we plan a Service & Learning trip.
TORONTO 2024
This year a group took the bus/GO train from Kitchener to Toronto on July 27 to spend several days engaging with Yonge Street Mission (YSM). Leaving our cars behind, we relied on public transportation which was a new experience for many of us from small-town Ontario. We stayed at the International Living and Learning Centre, a residence at Toronto Metropolitan University, which was ideally located for our volunteer work.
A pastor/coordinator from YSM helped us organize our time there. We worshipped with them at the Mission Church, went on a prayer walk in their part of the city, and volunteered at some of their programs. They have a food bank, the Double Take Thrift Store, and Evergreen Youth Centre that serves street-involved youth. Some received donations to the food bank, lugged heavy boxes or sorted. Others prepared and served food at Evergreen. Everyone helped at Double Take, sorting donations or organizing clothing in the store. What impressed us most was the compassion of staff and volunteers in all their programs, and the way they served Jesus in their community.
The group also spent a morning at The Daily Bread Food Bank, a large warehouse where donations are received, repackaged and sent out to over 200 organizations in Toronto serving those in need. Each evening we debriefed and had a time of sharing.
We also enjoyed spending time at the Waterfront, touring the Legislative Assembly of Ontario building and taking time to pray there, visiting the ROM and checking out some interesting restaurants!
Previous destinations have been Birmingham, AL and places in Ontario: Timmins, Ottawa and Leamington. Where will another year take us?
